The captain found him at last. He was deep asleep.
He could not believe his eyes.
“How could you sleep while our very lives are in danger? Wake up! You have got to pray; otherwise we are not going to make it to the next port alive”
Jonah woke up. “What are you saying?”
“You have got to pray to pray to your god! By the way, which god do you worship? May be we have got him covered already!”
Jonah yawned from sleep. “I am the one who causes you all this trouble!” said Jonah, “well, kind of”
“How could that be?” asked the captain.
“I worship Lord God, the one who created everything. The ocean, the land, you and me, all He created! We sort of got some disagreement between me and Him. ”
“How so?”
“He wanted me to go Nineveh, but I don’t want to. Instead, I chose to go to Tarshish. So, this entire storm is, in actual fact, nothing but His way of reminding me of His orders. Me sleeping here is a polite reminder that I will not go back to Japha if that means going to Nineveh!”
The captain thought Jonah was deluded. He went up the decks to will his sailors steady the ship. But the storm got worse.
“May be that dude is not deluded after all?” he thought. “Let us roll a dice to see who is responsible for our troubles.”
Jonah was picked.
“You know what? We don’t have your details in the ship’s manifest because this is a cargo ship, strictly no passengers. So, what is your name?”
“Jonah, son of Amittai”
“Where do you live?”
“Galilee. I am a Hebrew”
“What is your profession?”
“Well, I am a prophet. I tell people what Lord want them to do. In this particular instance I just don’t want to go to Nineveh.”
“Is that the reason we get all this trouble?”
“Sure! As soon as you dispose me off, you will all be fine. Then I just don’t go to Nineveh. Lord will be displeased, but that is between me and Him.”
The captain ordered the ship to go back to Japha. But the scary winds became scarier.
“Jonah, are you sure of what you are talking about?”
“Yes, just take me and throw me into the ocean! I don’t go to Nineveh, you remain safe.”
He lay down again, snoozing.
“Jonah,” Lord spoke to him. “If they throw you away, I am going to send a big fish to swallow you!”
“Will you? Hope I’ll still be fine!”
At this juncture, the captain and the sailors could not withstand the storm anymore.
